3MT Application - WSUCOE - 2024

  • Eligibility

    Active doctoral students or candidates are eligible to participate in 3MT competitions.
  • Rules

    * A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any descriptions are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.

    * No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.

    * No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.

    * Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.

    * Presentations are to be spoken word (i.e., no poems, raps or songs).

    * Presentations are to commence from the stage or other designated stage area. DURING COVID, this will be on camera via Zoom.

    * Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.

    * The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
  • Judging Criteria

    Comprehension & Content

    * Did the presentation help the audience understand the research?

    Was the thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?

    Engagement & Communication

    * Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
  • Presentation Info

  • This does not have to mirror your actual thesis title. It should be "friendly" and easy to understand.
  • We put a small one-paragraph description on the web about your thesis topic. We reserve the right to edit for grammar and spelling.
  • Max. file size: 195 MB.
    This will be used on our website. It needs to be clear. And it needs to be a large size (preferably 2MB or greater), and its orientation should be landscape (fat) not portrait (tall).
    There would be NO COST to have a photo taken.
