Dairy Manure Compost Pellets for Environmental Pollution Control

Many people can relate with dairy products. However, dairy production also generates significant amount of manure. Although manure nutrients have beneficial applications for crop production, there is enormous potential for adverse environmental impacts from excess manure nutrients generated in regions with large concentrations of animal production. To alleviate such potential threats, this study investigated the technical and economic feasibilities of concentrating manure nutrients (via pelleting excess dairy manure blended with other materials) to enhance their value, utilization, transport, and storage. Results of this study show that pelleting dairy manure nutrients is not only technically viable but also an economical process of enhancing the value of excess nutrients while mitigating their potential adverse environmental impacts.

About Femi

Femi Peter Alege started his doctoral program in the Spring of 2018. He is currently a doctoral candidate and research assistant in the Land, Air, Water Resources, and Environmental Engineering (LAWREE) research group in the department of Biological Systems and Agricultural Engineering at Washington State University. He has a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering and a master’s degree in Agricultural/Environmental Engineering. His doctoral research is motivated by his passion for sustainable agriculture and mitigating environmental pollution, especially from agricultural systems.
