Kent Godfrey’s Three Minute Thesis
Explorations into Multisensory Music
For his doctoral thesis, Kent Godfrey is amassing evidence that music can be experienced through multiple senses. This evidence comes from and is applied to disciplines such as anthropology, ethnomusicology, neuroscience, and disability studies. Cultural relativism and innovation are central to his work. Kent’s thesis provides theoretical support for multisensory music activities such as painting music, object exploration, and moving to floor patterns, thereby making music more accessible to deaf and autistic people.
Interdisciplinary Studies
Kent’s training includes certificates from Ringling Brothers’ Clown College and the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance; a BA in theatre from the University of Iowa; and an MA in Special Ed. from Converse College. Kent is a former Peace Corps volunteer and TEDx speaker. He hopes that his work will make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
