Amir Gilmore’s Three Minute Thesis

Afrofuturism, Youth, and Pedagogies of Possibility

Afrofuturism combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity and a magical realm with non-Western beliefs by focusing through a black cultural lens. Afrofuturism can be used as a framework to empower underrepresented youth because not only does it allow them to escape the harsh realities of the present, it also allows them to dream of the future. With societal pressures and mandated exams, the youth of today do not have time to be young, explore their thoughts and have the ability to experiment with their identity. Afrofuturism is a vehicle that breaks down the heteronormative timeline and allows the people to recreate the world their eyes.
