Testing Tests

With rising concerns surrounding testing, this project investigated the potential learning gains of low stakes practice testing as compared to non-testing conditions. Findings from our meta-analysis of 217 published experiments suggest that low stakes practice testing increase learning (as measured by tests) irrespective of comparison conditions, learner’s age, subject, and feedback. This finding encourages learners, whatever their age and profession, to engage themselves in the content through quizzes related to the topic they are learning about. There are many ways to apply this evidence based research finding in any learning setting ranging from low tech pen and paper settings to more interactive game-based learning platforms.
